It seems like just yesterday that Mike Tomlin was the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and maybe that's because it wasn't long ago. Tomlin and the franchise cut ties in January of this year, so at this time last year, he was the guy heading up the Steelers and getting ready for a new season.
Tomlin was with the Steelers for a whopping 19 seasons. That's huge. He was part of a handful of surprise coach moves in the NFL during the offseason, including John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens separating ways after 18 seasons.
But, Tomlin is gone from the Steelers, but he may not be gone from the NFL for too long.
Mike Tomlin is open to returning to the NFL
During an appearance on Pro Football Focus's NFL Show, Tomlin talked about his future. He said he was definitely open to coaching again, but only if the opportunity is right.
"It's certainly not a 32-team league for me, but I've also learned to never say never," Tomlin said on the show. "I love to coach. I love all the challenges of the profession."
He added, "I love to be a part of growth and development of young people individually. I love the measurement of the seven-day cycle, but also have enjoyed, man, the last six months life on this other side that I had no idea about."
He also said that he'd love to work with Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. "It just seems like he's at his best in the most critical moments," he said. "Late in the games, he finds a way to do it."
Well, the Bills have Joe Brady as their head coach. But, it really sounds like Tomlin wouldn't say no to the right opportunity back in the NFL, whether it's with Allen or another quarterback.
