Cowboys trade pitch lands Steelers $5.3 million young playmaker to address position of need

The Dallas Cowboys completely overhauled their running back this offseason, as the team let Rico Dowdle walk and added Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders through free agency. The team also selected Texas standout Jaydon Blue in the fifth round of the draft.

Though Dallas already has a crowded running back, Last Word on Sports' Anthony Palacios lists the Cowboys as a potential landing spot for Pittsburgh Steelers playmaker Jaylen Warren.

"Despite drafting Jaydon Blue, the Cowboys still have an issue in the backfield, and guys like Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders won’t make it any better. Jerry Jones must do something to address this unit. Warren is a better fit who has a ton of years ahead of him that could carve out a role, even as a backup, to be a viable weapon in the red zone," Palacios wrote.

Warren spent his first three seasons in the league as Najee Harris' backup in Pittsburgh, but he has been pretty productive in that role. The 26-year-old tallied over 1,100 scrimmage yards in 2023 and posted 821 yards from scrimmage in 2024.

Though Warren has promise and has shown flashes in a limited role so far in his career, the Steelers could look to trade him, as he has just one year left on his deal, and the team just used a third-round pick on a running back in Kaleb Johnson, who looks poised to be the starter.

Dallas would be an intriguing landing spot for Warren, as the former undrafted free agent would receive the chance to compete for the starting role in the backfield and could fit well in Brian Schottenheimer's offense. Additionally, Warren shouldn't cost too much to acquire in a trade, though there is some risk involved in giving up draft capital for him with his deal set to expire after the season.

Warren doesn't have a long-term future in Pittsburgh, but the Oklahoma State product will likely be on the Steelers roster in 2025 to provide versatility in the running back room.
