Cowboys make discouraging announcement on Micah Parsons contract extension

The Dallas Cowboys will have to find a way to compete better with the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles this season. One thing is for certain: they will want Micah Parsons leading the charge.

Parsons is one of the best players in the NFL, but is looking for a contract extension. He is a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. He could be seeking a deal that makes him the highest-paid defensive player ever. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones spoke on the state of negotiations. His comments could hint at a long process in getting Parsons signed.

"I've never been one to crystal ball when contracts get done," Jones said via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "You can be close, you think you're right around the corner, and then they get pushed out and there's extenuating circumstances as to why they or their agent don't wanna pull the trigger. So, that's just a work in progress. It's never easy to comment on them because you really don't know where you are until both sides are ready to go. But obviously our goal is to, and we have visited at times with Micah, and our goal is to get him here. And I think Micah wants to be a Cowboy, and we want him to be a Cowboy long term."

Joines clearly does not have a timeline on when a deal could get done. If the two sides were close, he would have noted that Parsons would go into training camp paid. However, his comments about not knowing how long it would take are discouraging.

If training camp rolls around and Parsons does not have a new deal, he would be wise to hold out. An injury before guaranteeing his extension could cost him some serious money. The Cowboys have recently reached extensions with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, but it was far from smooth sailing. A holdout could hurt the Cowboys as they prepare to get back on track for 2025.

Both sides have made it clear that they see Parsons' future in Dallas. However, figuring out the money seems to be more of a question mark. Jones noted the team has met with Parsons, but the fact that a deal is not done yet indicates that perhaps the two sides cannot agree on specific details.
