Cowboys linked to Commanders top assistant in head coach search

The Dallas Cowboys are still searching for their next head coach. They could target a Washington Commanders coordinator for their coaching vacancy.

Cowboys insider Ed Werder noted that Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is "one possibility" for the Cowboys. The Commanders are currently still in the playoffs so the Cowboys may have to wait before they can actually meet with Kingsbury.

He was formerly head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. He had a 28-37 record as the head coach of the Cardinals and reached the playoffs just once. This season he has helped turn the Commanders' offense under Jayden Daniels into one of the best in the league. The Commanders rank seventh in yards and fifth in points.

Kingsbury has yet to make it known whether or not he wants to become a head coach again. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter on the Pat McAfee Show, he may be content as the offensive coordinator in Washington for now.

"I think Kliff Kingsbury is very happy in Washington," Schefter said. "He has an incredible quarterback, a transcendent quarterback. Between making money in Arizona and having the head coaching experience he did, he's not rushing to become a head coach again."

However, if Kingsbury does open up to moving on from the Commanders, the Cowboys should rush to interview him. He could make an instant impact on the Cowboys offense, a unit that struggled this season. He has experience as a head coach, and perhaps having star players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons is what he was lacking in Arizona.
