Cowboys desperately need to sign running back after roster cuts

1 hour ago 3

The Cowboys are going grocery shopping and they're missing a key ingredient: Running back depth.

Dallas has cut multiple running backs as the final roster takes shape and it's left only a few rushers on the team.

The Cowboys waived Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah, and Israel Abanikanda.

It leaves just three running backs on the roster: Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke, who is more like a fullback.

Jerry Jones and the front office has some work to do to fill the gap.

Why the Cowboys need to find a running back

Javonte Williams was signed to a three-year, $24 million deal in the offseason. He set career highs with 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Cowboys have an unquestioned starter. Great!

Here's the problem.

Williams has struggled with injuries throughout his career. If he goes down, the next man up is Malik Davis. Davis showed some bright spots last year but he's far from a bellcow.

Hunter Luepke is also on the roster but he's more of a pass protection and jumbo package piece. The Cowboys will never rely their offense solely on Luepke.

Which means Dallas needs at least one, if not more, options at the position.

ESPN's Todd Archer believes that the Cowboys may retain some of their waived players as practice squad call-ups.

The Cowboys have also waived RB Israel Abanikanda, per source, which leaves them with Javonte Williams, Malik Davis and Hunter Luepke in the room. Likely looking at practice squad callups on gameday at the spot potentially. And reminder this is "initial 53," not the "final 53."

If that's the case, Dallas may be relying on a player like Jaydon Blue who they haven't shown much trust in.

Blue's biggest headline with the Cowboys was wearing Louis Vuitton cleats at practice.

In short, Dallas has some work to do.

A few available running backs with a history of production? Kareem Hunt, Raheem Mostert, Antonio Gibson are notable rushers.

The Cowboys will have to either pick from that list, their list of waived players, or hope for perfect health from their current RB's.

Dallas fans will be crossing their fingers for Williams to have another incredible, healthy season.
