Cowboys could cut ties with former 2nd round pick in trade for Day 3 pick

The Dallas Cowboys have seven picks on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. Their first pick on Day 3 will come in the fifth round, but they could trade one of their players in order to get some extra picks.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Luke Schoonmaker in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. However, Jake Ferguson has emerged as the team's top tight end, making Schoonmaker expendable. USA Today's K.D. Drummond tabbed him as a potential trade candidate to add some extra picks.

"The former second-round pick from Michigan has not made much headway to become an integral part of the Cowboys offense," wrote Drummond. "Perhaps new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who has been the offensive coordinator the last few years, has seen enough. If another team wants to offer a Day 3 pick for Schoonmaker, the Cowboys may cut their losses and make that move, opening up space for players like John Stephens, Jr. and Brevyn Spann-Ford to play opposite Jake Ferguson."

Schoonmaker has 35 receptions for 306 yards and three touchdowns in his career. Meanwhile, Ferguson already has a Pro Bowl selection under his belt. He has solidified himself as one of the team's top pass catchers.

The Cowboys could package Schoonmaker in a trade to move up and get a pick in the fourth round. The 26-year-old could be a valuable piece for a team looking to add some depth in their tight end room, and does not want to do so with a rookie.

Schoonmaker has already shown he can be an asset to an NFL team, but with Ferguson in the building, he is less valuable to the Cowboys.
