Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont has largely stayed out of the spotlight since his family bought the team two years ago. But that changed this week, when Las Vegas Sands Corp. named Dumont its next chairman and CEO, a move that connects him even more closely to Las Vegas, a top NBA expansion target.
Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont's latest leadership role at Las Vegas Sands Corp is bound to start the rumor-mill
Dumont’s upcoming promotion to lead Las Vegas Sands, effective March 1, coincides with the NBA’s gradual approach to a highly anticipated expansion vote. The league is considering adding new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle. Commissioner Adam Silver and other league leaders have consistently described Las Vegas as a strong candidate for an NBA team, making it a frontrunner if owners decide to approve expansion later this year.
The Adelson family controls about 250 acres in Irving, close to where Texas Stadium once stood. They are holding onto this land for a potential destination resort—a project that could one day include a new Mavericks arena, but only if casino gambling becomes legal in Texas.
But what are the chances this vision becomes reality anytime soon? The odds remain slim. Texas political leaders have consistently opposed legalizing casino gambling, making it difficult to predict when—or if—the resort-arena project can move forward. Meanwhile, the Mavericks must secure a new home by 2031 to replace the American Airlines Center, adding pressure and fueling speculation about Adelson and Dumont’s long-term intentions for the team.
In 2025, Dumont strongly rejected rumors about moving the Mavericks to Las Vegas, emphasizing the team’s deep connection to Dallas and its community.
“The Dallas Mavericks are not moving to Las Vegas,” Dumont told the Morning News. “There is no question in that. That is the answer, unequivocally. The Dallas Mavericks are the Dallas Mavericks and they will be in Dallas.” Dumont told the Dallas Morning News in 2025.
Dumont will soon lead one of the world’s most influential gaming and resort companies at the same time the league is poised to plant a flag in Las Vegas, a city that already hosts summer league, in-season tournament games and other high-profile events.
