After several moves at the running back position this offseason, we figured it was just a matter of time before the Pittsburgh Steelers released Cordarrelle Patterson.
While it took longer than expected, that time has finally come. Patterson confirmed on Monday that he has indeed been released by the team in what was a hilarious social media post.
"Breaking news," Patterson wrote. "Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up Cordarrelle Patterson on his day off!!!"
The writing was on the wall that Patterson wasn't long for Pittsburgh. The team re-signed Jaylen Warren, drafted Kaleb Johnson and signed Kenneth Gainwell and Trey Sermon in free agency.
The four-time Pro Bowler had been spotted at the team's training camp, although he wasn't actually taking part in practice. It was odd that the Steelers didn't do this sooner, and what the hold up was is anyone's guess.
Patterson's lone year with the Steelers saw him tally 32 carries for 135 scoreless yards. He also had 12 catches for 80 yards.
Following Pittsburgh's season-ending loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, Patterson expressed frustration with his lack of touches.
He was also quite vocal on social media and tried to recruit different wide receivers to Pittsburgh when the team was in the market for one last season.
Patterson, 34, has played at both running back and wide receiver during his career, but he really made his mark as a returner, leading to his four Pro Bowl nods.
We'll see if he can latch on with another team before the season starts.
