Commanders planning kicker competition between 2 players

The Washington Commanders don't yet have a definitive starting kicker for the 2026 NFL season.

The plan is to have a competition between two talented legs to see who wins the kicking job.

Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed to reporters Friday the plan for a competition, which will pit Jake Moody against Drew Stevens.

Moody is the sort-of incumbent.

He began the 2025 season with the 49ers but kicked in only one game before being cut.

Moody then filled-in for a couple games with the Chicago Bears.

He closed out the year with six games with the Commanders.

For the entire season, he was 19-for-23 on field goals, including 2-for-2 from beyond 50 yards, including a 56-yarder.

Moody was regarded as one of the best young kickers in the league after his 2023 season, but he regressed in 2024, which contributed to his journeyman-style 2025.

Stevens is an undrafted free agent out of Iowa.

In four seasons with the Hawkeyes, Stevens made 76-of-95 field goals (80.0%) despite the wider college hashmarks. He was 12-for-19 from beyond 50 yards, and he made a 58-yarder in 2025.

Stevens was also 124-for-126 on extra points (98.4%).

You'd think Moody holds the leg up just based on NFL experience, but the Commanders have left the door open for Stevens.
