Commanders handed interesting grade for $30 million free agent signing

The Washington Commanders have been big players in free agency, completing several deals, mostly for the defensive side of the ball.

But general manager Adam Peters has also done work on the offense for Jayden Daniels, signing Tennessee Titans tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo to a three-year, $30 million deal.

With the Commanders' tight end room not in great shape after Zach Ertz's injury last season, the Commanders needed another body, but one that can be productive.

And for CBS Sports' Garrett Podell, he's graded Washington's move a C.

“With Zach Ertz hitting free agency and coming off a season-ending leg injury at the age of 35, the Commanders needed a new starter at tight end,” Podell wrote. “Okonkwo's production, 194 catches for 2,017 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns, across four seasons isn't huge, but at the age of 26, Washington is betting on an uptick for him alongside quarterback Jayden Daniels.”

Is Okonkwo a missing piece?

Well, he could be, but his production while with the Titans hasn't been eye-popping.

He's passed 500 yards just twice, and he has only 8 TDs, but there is a nice little stat that Commanders fans might like.

In each of his four seasons, the young tight end has averaged more than nine yards per reception, meaning he's a chain mover.

While the Commanders aren't likely expecting him to put up Ertz-type numbers in the passing game, maybe Okonkwo can become a nice piece of Washington's offense for Daniels.

And at $10 million APY, he's going to have to be.
