Colton Cowser delivers historic Orioles moment when Baltimore needed it most

59 minutes ago 3

The Baltimore Orioles have spent much of the 2026 season searching for consistency, answers, and momentum in a loaded American League race. Over the past two days, Colton Cowser may have given them all three.

Baltimore pulled off a dramatic 9-7 extra-innings win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Memorial Day, but the story quickly became Cowser’s incredible late-game heroics. For the second straight day, the Orioles outfielder launched a walk-off home run, this time crushing a two-run shot in the 13th inning to send Camden Yards into chaos.

It was more than just another clutch hit. According to Elias Sports Bureau research, Cowser became the first Orioles player since Fred Lynn in 1985 to hit walk-off home runs on consecutive days.

Per Elias Sports Bureau, Orioles' Colton Cowser is 5th MLB player in last 25 years with 2 walk-off home runs in a 3-team-game span, joining:

Jonah Heim (2021)
Albert Pujols (2011)
Barry Bonds (2003)
Vladimir Guerrero (2002)

Cowser may finally be breaking out of frustrating slump

The timing could not be bigger for Baltimore. Cowser entered the season still trying to rediscover the form that made him one of baseball’s brightest young stars during his breakout 2024 campaign. That season, he blasted 24 home runs and finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

Since then, though, the production dipped sharply. Cowser struggled through a disappointing 2025 season while carrying those frustrations into parts of 2026. Even after his recent surge, he entered Monday hitting just .200 with a .316 slugging percentage.

But inside the Orioles clubhouse, there is growing belief that this weekend could become a turning point. Baltimore manager Craig Albernaz praised not only Cowser’s results, but also the work that went unseen behind the scenes.

“He’s been grinding through it,” Albernaz said after the win. “You see the work, the adjustments, the conversations with the hitting coaches. To see it pay off in those moments means a lot for everybody in that room.”

Orioles survive one of wildest games of their season

Cowser’s home run capped one of Baltimore’s most chaotic wins of the year. The Orioles repeatedly looked dead before fighting their way back. Baltimore rallied from deficits in the 11th inning, 12th inning, and again in the 13th against an AL-leading Rays team that had controlled much of the series.

Cowser also delivered one of the game’s biggest moments before his home run. In the 12th inning, he raced home on a ground ball and was initially called out at the plate. After a replay review, officials overturned the call when replays showed his arm slipping underneath the tag of catcher Nick Fortes.

That play kept Baltimore alive long enough for another unforgettable finish. Starter Kyle Bradish gave the Orioles six strong innings earlier in the game, but afterward, even he admitted the clubhouse believes Cowser may finally be turning the corner.

“We all know what he’s capable of,” Bradish said. “It feels like he’s starting to become that player again.”

Suddenly, Baltimore has life again

For much of the season, the Orioles have searched for someone capable of delivering emotional momentum. Cowser just gave them two straight unforgettable nights.

More importantly, he reminded everyone why Baltimore believed he could become one of the franchise’s cornerstone players. The raw power, confidence, and ability to deliver under pressure that defined his rise through the minors suddenly looks like it is returning at exactly the right time.

And if this really is the beginning of another Cowser breakout, the rest of the American League may have a problem on its hands.
