The Cleveland Browns were the ones to pull the trigger on Shedeur Sanders during the draft.
They were also the team that was used to prove a point to Shedeur on draft night and make a mockery of him on a national stage.
Now he looks like the best quarterback at OTAs, and he isn’t even getting first-team reps according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi.
“Browns OTA practice just ended. It was a strong day for Shedeur Sanders, who notably was the only QB not to take reps with the first-team offense today,” Oyefusi wrote.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski has downplayed the practice order and first-team reps, but we’ll see if that changes during mandatory minicamp next week.”
Shedeur is getting praised everywhere, working with backups. Robert Griffin III had glowing words for Sanders.
“When you watch all the clips of Shedeur Sanders, you see why his tape said he was a 1st Round QB. He plays with NFL timing and rhythm, reads with his feet, plays ahead of the defense, has more than enough arm strength and he knows how to layer the ball,” Griffin said.
There are four healthy quarterbacks on the Browns roster, and there are people who say this is a four-person competition, but this is clearly a three-person race.
It’s Shedeur, Dillon Gabriel, and Joe Flacco.
We should see Shedeur get first-round snaps when the Browns have mandatory minicamp starting June 10- 12th. When that happens, Sanders may propel himself ahead of everyone else to forcibly make this a two-person race.
There are already people inside the organization who believe he could be the starter.
As ESPN’s Kimberley A. Martin reported by Doric Sam of Bleacher Report.com said this Wednesday
"Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," she said. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it’s also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge."
So why is Shedeur getting reps with only the second string?
Then, when he has obviously looked the best at practice, they just shove Sanders to the bottom of the depth chart? That is just spiteful, especially when others have said he was born to be a star.
Yes, we all know Flacco is there, and truly, if he is pushed to be the starter, it is out of spite against Shedeur. It would be even worse if they outright cut him and let another team scoop him up.
Think about this scenario: Shedeur ends up with the Los Angeles Rams for nothing, becoming heir to the keys to that offense. Which is way better than Cleveland’s. You’d likely watch him shine with that team, and then the Browns look like fools to the rest of the league.
Hopefully with what Kimberley said is a sign of good things to come for Shedeur, but we will see Tuesday who he may be throwing the ball to.
