Shedeur Sanders met with several teams before the NFL Draft, reportedly sandbagging meetings with franchises he didn’t want to play for. Sanders’ saga of pre-draft controversies saw him slide to the fifth round as the former Colorado quarterback went to Cleveland with the No. 144 pick.
Sports Illustrated’s Michael Breer joined “Zolak and Bertrand” on 98.5 The Sports Hub to discuss Sanders’ disastrous pre-draft meeting with the New York Giants. Breer reported that the Buffaloes legend did not seem to eager to make a lasting impression on Brian Daboll and the Giants.
“The Giants one … they give players an install, and there are mistakes intentionally put in the install," Breer said. "He didn't catch them and got called on it, and it didn't go well after that ... He was pissed that they did that to him.”
New York’s use of intentional mistakes in the playbook is a commonly practiced tool for pre-draft evaluations and combine interviews, but Sanders didn’t handle it well at all. Breer also revealed that Sanders argued with the Giants over an interception he threw.
"He throws a bad interception. It was a deep throw early in the game," Breer said. "They go in the meeting, they show the interception and they say, 'What happened here?' (Sanders responds,) 'Well, I like to get into a rhythm earlier in the game.'
“They get into it over that, and his conclusion is, 'Well, maybe I'm not a fit for you…’ The person who told me that story was like, 'I've never heard that before.' It was in a combine interview when you're just going from team to team trying to put your best foot forward."
Breer went on to say Shedeur handled his pre-draft process “like he was a top-five lock,” further fueling the narratives surrounding his lack of humility and professionalism. Deion, Shedeur’s father, has also divided fans and media with his involvement in his son’s football journey.
Coach Prime, who coached his son at Colorado, retired Shedeur’s jersey at the Buffaloes’ spring game on April 19. Deion reportedly broke CU protocol to retire the jerseys of Shedeur and his former teammate, Travis Hunter.
Despite the negative attention he and his father have received, Shedeur has a chance to write his own story moving forward. The newest member of the Browns will battle for Cleveland’s starting quarterback gig at training camp.
