Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns were involved in one of the biggest storylines in modern WWE history, which saw the former pursue the latter in a bid to win the world title. It has now been revealed that the former Tribal Chief made the call to win their match at WrestleMania 39.

The current Undisputed WWE Champion made his intentions clear from the day he returned to the company: he wanted to finish the story started by his father and win the world title. He went on to win the Royal Rumble in 2023, eliminating Gunther to punch his ticket to WrestleMania 39.

Roman Reigns had completed 1000 days as champion, and it was widely expected that Cody Rhodes would dethrone him as champion in the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania 39. Shockingly, the American Nightmare came up short. It has now been revealed that it was the former Bloodline leader’s call. On the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman convinced Vince McMahon to make it a 2-year program and have Cody Rhodes come up short in his first attempt.

Vince McMahon had stepped down as the chairman of WWE, and Triple H was in charge. However, Dave Meltzer further stated that it was Vince McMahon who had the final say on proceedings.

Cody Rhodes finished the story against Roman Reigns at WWE WrestleMania 40

Undeterred by his failure, Cody Rhodes entered the Royal Rumble in 2024 and became a back-to-back winner after eliminating CM Punk. He went on to challenge Roman Reigns once again, and the two megastars squared off in the main event of the Showcase of Immortals.

The pair were involved in a tag team match on Night 1 as the former AEW EVP teamed up with Seth Rollins to take on the former Head of the Table and The Rock. The winning team would determine the stipulation of the match. The Samoan team came out on top, making Night 2’s main event a Bloodline Rules match.

Despite the entire Bloodline’s involvement in the match, legends like John Cena and The Undertaker came to Rhodes’ rescue as he finally finished the story and won the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
