We all have that friend who's completely clueless about celebrity gossip and the showbiz industry.
Some people seem to live under a rock (myself included, sometimes), and they have no idea what's going on in the world. In some cases, that can be a bliss, and in others, it's plain hilarious. Some people are too busy working to turn on the TV for at least five minutes; some others have hobbies that are way too niche for the rest of us, mere mortals, and as a result, all pop culture references and gossip go right over their heads. It's funny for all of us who know the celebrities and situations and conspiracy theories going on on the internet, but for them it can be utterly confusing.
I'll confess here: I'm technically speaking, Gen Z, and so is my brother, but oh boy, I can't count the number of times when he has made a specific reference to something timely and that very same thing goes right through me like ghosts on Halloween night. Half of the time, I have no idea what he's talking about, and we're almost the same age! I feel like a fish out of water every time I talk to him. Or my cousins, for that matter. Even my boyfriend, who has no interest in celebrity gossip or anything remotely similar, knows all the references.
That's why, to some extent, I can relate to this man, Laurence Leavy, who sat right next to world-famous singer Dua Lipa during a baseball game and didn't recognize her!
For the record, I do know who Dua Lipa is. I've loved her music since I heard New Rules and Homesick for the first time. What I mean is that I totally understand the concept of feeling like everybody is in a joke you're missing. Apparently, he was not the only one chronically offline here, because while some people thought it was hilarious that he didn't recognize her and her husband, others were just as confused. Seems like there are a lot more people living under a rock than we thought!
