Former LA Lakers big man Christian Wood grabbed headlines on Thursday. Wood, according to multiple reports, fired at three intruders who tried to break into the place he was staying. Per the police, three shots were fired by Wood, but none of the suspects were hit.

According to investigators, the attempted break-in occurred at 1 p.m. when the suspects tried to enter the property via the back door. Wood fired from the inside of the house to stop the invasion.

The police also said that the three Black men failed to take anything from the house located at the 14800 block of Otsego Street. A video from ABC7 Eyewitness News showed the police combing the property for evidence after the suspects left in a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Knee injuries derailed Christian Wood’s NBA career

Christian Wood looked ready to take a big leap when he placed fourth in Sixth Man of the Year voting in 2020. However, the Detroit Pistons traded him to the Houston Rockets, where he flourished even more as a starter.

During his two-year stay with the Rockets, he averaged 19.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Wood’s 38.4% shooting from deep prompted the Dallas Mavericks to add him to Luka Doncic’s supporting crew in 2022.

Christian Wood resumed his off-the-bench role while playing with Luka Magic. He averaged 16.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg and 1.8 apg. Wood shot 37.6% from deep to highlight his value as a floor-spacing big man. The 6-foot-11 center finished sixth in the Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Surprisingly, the Dallas Mavericks allowed him to leave in free agency. Wood took his talents to Hollywood, where he signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract with the LA Lakers in 2023. The deal also included a player option for the 2024-25 season.

Playing behind Anthony Davis, Wood averaged 6.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg and 1.0 apg. The usually sweet shooting big man hit just 30.7% of his shots before a left knee injury ended his 2023-24 season.

Christian Wood wanted to rebuild his value by doing well in LA. His so-so performances and the knee injury prompted him to opt into his $3.04 million deal for the 2024-25 season.

However, he had another left knee operation just before the start of the Lakers’ training camp in 2024. The team eventually waived him in February 2025. He remains an unrestricted free agent.
