Chiefs trade rumor could lead to blockbuster deal with 49ers

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly very interested in a trade for San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams.

Williams and the Niners are currently trying to hammer out a restructure that would lower the superstar left tackle's cap hit for 2026, but nothing has gotten done yet.

There have been rumors floating that if the Niners and Williams can't get something done, the 12-time Pro Bowler could be made available via trade, although that is going to be the very last resort for the 49ers, who desperately need to keep Williams, as his departure would leave an unfillable void upfront.

But if Williams is made available, Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom reports that the Chiefs would be "at the front of the line" to try and acquire him in a blockbuster trade.

"The Kansas City Chiefs, we continue to hear, would be at the front of the line to try to secure [Williams'] services," La Canfora wrote.

La Canfora adds that the Niners will not release Williams, and they do not want to trade him, either, but if the stalemate continues, the Niners' hand might be forced, especially if Williams requests a trade.

"The 49ers are making it clear to the player they have no intentions of simply releasing him to remedy the impasse, according to the sources, but have also been reluctant to embrace trade possibilities," La Canfora reported. "If the sides cannot bridge that gap by the end of the week, some rival executives believe a trade could become the likeliest outcome."

When it comes to any kind of progress on a new deal, La Canfora says there really hasn't been any. A big issue is the guaranteed money.

"The original two-year proposal they presented to Williams (went) nowhere and while there has been a bit of a thawing out in the sides original stances there was still considerable work to be done to reach a conclusion," he added.

"Figuring out the guaranteed money is a big issue for a 37-year old player who continues to perform at an elite level but has a history of serious injuries," La Canfora noted.

The Chiefs appear to have a starting tackle duo in-house with Josh Simmons and Jaylon Moore, but neither of those players are on the level Williams is and the Chiefs could definitely use that kind of an upgrade to the offensive line.

If the two teams do eventually talk about a trade, we could see the Chiefs putting together a package that includes one of those players.

That said, there are going to be several teams lining up to acquire Williams if he hits the trade block, so the Chiefs would be far from a lock to acquire him.
