Chiefs trade pitch lands Panthers $8.5 million 2-time Pro Bowl receiver for Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs could still be on the hunt for a wide receiver. The team lost Deandre Hopkins to the Baltimore Ravens in free agency and may look to add another reliable pass-catcher to help out quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who likes to spread the ball around to multiple different receivers.

The Chiefs could be eyeing a playmaker in this week's draft, but Last Word on Sports' Anthony Palacios lists Kansas City as a top landing spot for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Adam Thielen.

"The Chiefs don’t need to spend the top dollar for Adam Thielen, and they should get him at the bare minimum if they can. He still has some life in him to help quarterback Patrick Mahomes," Palacios wrote.

Thielen is getting older and played just ten games in 2024, but the veteran is productive when on the field and would be a nice addition to the Chiefs' offense. The 34-year-old hauled in 48 receptions for 615 yards and five touchdowns last year, but in his last fully healthy season in 2023, he tallied over 100 catches and 1,000 yards.

Trading for Thielen would give Mahomes a battle-tested security blanket who has shown that he can still be a difference-maker no matter the circumstances. Additionally, Thielen shouldn't cost too much to acquire in a deal and is on a very affordable contract.

Though Thielen would be an ideal fit in Kansas City's offense and make Mahomes life easier, the Panthers are unlikely to trade the two-time Pro Bowler. Carolina just signed Thielen to a new deal that raised his pay this offseason, and the former undrafted free agent is a valuable player to have on the roster as quarterback Bryce Young continues to develop.

The only way the Panthers trade Thielen is if a package is too good to pass on. Carolina could also look to get younger in the position group, but keeping Thielen as a veteran presence for a young team still makes sense.
