Chiefs receive huge Xavier Worthy update after scary practice exit

The Kansas City Chiefs are counting on a healthy Xavier Worthy to make a major impact in 2026 after injuries prevented the former first-round pick from reaching his full potential.

Selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Worthy entered last season with sky-high expectations. His elite speed was expected to add another explosive dimension to Patrick Mahomes’ offense, but those plans quickly hit a roadblock.

On just the third play of the Chiefs’ season opener, Worthy suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him and altered the course of his rookie campaign. Although he eventually returned to the field, he was never quite the same player.

Kansas City limited his route tree after his return, using him cautiously as he continued to recover. The restrictions prevented the blazing receiver from showcasing the game-breaking speed that made him one of college football’s most dangerous playmakers.

Now, entering his second NFL season fully healthy, the Chiefs are optimistic that Worthy can finally become the weapon they envisioned when they drafted him.

The coaching staff plans to feature Worthy in a variety of ways, including the screen game and on crossing routes where his speed can turn short completions into explosive gains. Combined with fellow playmaker Walker, Kansas City believes it has the personnel to put constant pressure on opposing defenses.

One Chiefs coach couldn’t hide his excitement after watching Worthy practice.

“He looks so fast,” the coach said following Friday’s workout.

That simple observation may be the biggest compliment Worthy could receive after spending much of last season battling through injury.

There was a brief scare on Saturday when Worthy left practice with what the team described as a shoulder injury. Given his history, the sight immediately raised concerns among fans and coaches alike.

Fortunately, early reports indicate the injury is not considered serious, easing fears that the young receiver could face another lengthy setback.

If Worthy can stay healthy, Kansas City’s offense could become even more dangerous in 2026. With Patrick Mahomes distributing the football and Andy Reid designing creative ways to utilize his speed, Worthy has all the ingredients for a breakout campaign that could make him one of the NFL’s most exciting young receivers.
