Winger Harvey Barron scored a first senior hat-trick as Hull FC ended a seven-game losing run with a 32-18 comeback win at St Helens.

Barron's treble boosted the Black and Whites' hopes of avoiding the Super League wooden spoon while casting further doubt on Saints making the end of season play-offs.

Hull had not previously won at the BrewDog Stadium in 10 games and nine years and sat just two points off bottom club Huddersfield Giants.

However, in this battle of the interim coaches, Andy Last got the better of counterpart Eamon O'Carroll, who last weekend oversaw Saints' first defeat at York in more than 80 years.

Hull trailed 14-10 approaching half-time but Barron struck almost on the hooter and completed his career landmark hat-trick after 47 minutes before substitute Cade Cust crashed over three minutes later.

Those 16 points in 11 minutes stunned Saints, still reeling from last month's exit of Paul Rowley after less than a year as head coach.

Despite a first away victory on Saints' territory since August 2017, Hull stay 13th although they are now level on points with Bradford Bulls.

St Helens have never failed to reach the play-offs but they remain seventh with all teams above them to play in the coming days.

They led three times in the opening 40 minutes but conceded their advantage each time and were fortunate to be level at 14-14.

The game's first mistake after barely two minutes saw full-back Logan Moy's knock-on punished by winger Lewis Murphy, who finished in the corner.

FC were behind only five minutes as Zak Hardaker's pass sent in Barron for the first of his treble.

Hastings edged Saints in front again with an 18th-minute penalty for Tom Briscoe's high tackle.

Prop Herman Ese'ese had a second Hull try ruled out for a double movement while he and Barron were repelled in quick succession before the visitors' deservedly hit the front.

Stand-off Jake Arthur's double cut-out pass freed Lewis Martin to finish in the left corner to make it 10-8.

Barron was denied again by last-gasp cover tackling and it was against the run of play when Jack Welsby raced 30 metres to touch down.

With 37 seconds remaining Saints captain Hastings dropped out. Thirty four seconds later Barron seized on Aidan Sezer's angled kick to cross again, waiting anxiously before video referee Chris Kendall overturned Liam Rush's on-field decision of 'no try'.

Tries for Barron and Cust, both converted by Hardaker, virtually put the contest out of reach.

By the time Harry Robertson scored a consolation try, Hardaker's 70th-minute penalty sealed the deal for Hull FC, who finished off with a further try from ex-Saint James Bell.

In the Women's Super League, Wigan Warriors saw off rivals St Helens 44-6 in the first match of the new Super Four format.

The defending champions outclassed St Helens with Ellise Derbyshire and Eva Hunter scoring a brace with further scores from Anna Davies, Molly Jones, Remi Wilton, Jenna Foubister and Mary Coleman at the BrewDog Stadium.
