Chiefs part ways with former 4th-round QB as Patrick Mahomes recovers from injury

The Kansas City Chiefs still have some uncertainty at the quarterback position as Patrick Mahomes recovers from his late-season knee injury.

That didn't stop them from removing one QB from their depth chart on Monday.

The Chiefs have waived Jake Haener, which means he will be available for another team to claim before he enters the free agent pool.

Haener is a 27-year old former fourth-round pick who has appeared in eight NFL games, all in 2024 with the New Orleans Saints.

He started one game that season, a loss.

In his career, Haener has completed 18-of-39 passes for 226 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

He was released by the Saints in January and signed by the Chiefs in February.

Apparently the three months or so Haener spent in Kansas City's building was enough to decide that he didn't need to stick around any longer.

Haener was a bit surplus to proceedings after the Chiefs drafted Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. They may not have planned on picking the passer from LSU, but his long slide made him available very late.

Nussmeier and Mahomes are currently joined in the Chiefs' QB room by Justin Fields and Chris Oladokun.

Haener will have a better chance of earning a spot on a different roster, not this one, and so the Chiefs have parted ways with him.
