Running back Kenneth Walker III is fitting in just right with the Kansas City Chiefs. His breakout game with the team came right away, actually, during the Chiefs' game against the Denver Broncos in their win.
During that Chiefs-Broncos game, Walker recorded 173 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown on 23 carries, according to ESPN research and stats. He also clocked three receptions for 18 yards and one receiving touchdown. That's incredible work.
Then, during the team's "Monday Night Football" matchup against the Colts, he followed up on that success with 117 rushing yards on 24 carries, as well as 61 receiving yards on six catches out of 10 targets. So, he has no reason not to be on the field every moment, right?
Andy Reid wants to keep Kenneth Walker III off the field a bit
On Monday, head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters about the team's running back situation. He said that Walker wants every snap, but it may not work out that way.
"The other part is allowing Emmett to grow," Reid told reporters. "I think Emmett will continue to get more snaps, and that will take a little bit of the load off Kenny. He wants the ball every play, Ken does. He's not asking to be relieved or anything else."
Reid added, "But, I think as it goes on you get a nice balance with those two in there, and it keeps them more fresh as the season goes on."
So, Walker may not get every single snap in the upcoming games, but he should be okay with that. He's the team's star running back, and there's no use in wearing him out, especially if the game isn't tight and is in favor of the Chiefs. It's a calculated and smart move on Reid's part to rest Walker and give Emmett some time on the field to grow.
