The Los Angeles Chargers are having the worst season of any team in the NFL through the first five weeks of the season. The Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans are 0-5 like the Chargers, but there's a lot that's different between those teams and the Chargers.
Coming into the 2026 season, the Chargers were seen as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. But now, they appear to be one of the biggest sellers at the NFL trade deadline. Khalil Mack, Quinten Johnston, and many others could be on the move.
What about Justin Herbert? Would the Chargers trade him and fully reset this team amid such a disappointing season? Well, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler made it clear that no, the Chargers do not plan on trading Herbert.
Chargers do not plan to trade Justin Herbert amid disaster 2026 season
"Yes, many evaluators around the league maintain a deep affinity for Justin Herbert despite his poor play," Fowler writes. "But he's not being made available for trade."
While there is a path forward if the Chargers want to blow this team up and sell every piece they have on the team that has any value, that's not likely to happen at all.
Instead, the Chargers are more likely to keep this core together, trading only a few pieces by the trade deadline with the hope of turning things around in 2026, or at least in 2027.
While the Chargers surely could get an absolute haul for Herbert in a trade, a mid-season deal is just not really feasible for the Chargers, and one over the offseason does not appear to be in the cards either.

There might be more trade rumors about Herbert in the future, but it seems clear that any Herbert trade won't happen for a while, if one were to ever actually happen.
This should not be a surprise to anyone, as finding a QB with as much talent as Herbert is incredibly difficult. Even though this year has been a disaster so far, trading him would not do the Chargers any good, as they'd be set back a few years.
So, will a Herbert trade happen this season? It's probably safe to say that no, Herbert won't be traded. Even over the offseason, it's very unlikely to see Herbert dealt.
This might be a situation to monitor in the future, but as of now, all signs point towards Herbert sticking with the Chargers for the foreseeable future.
