Chargers finally have ideal creative environment for Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers were a tough watch on offense last season, as Justin Herbert was sacked 54 times and didn't want to throw the ball all too often.

A run-first offense, the Chargers were boring.

But now, as we look back on their offseason, L.A. has made some big additions, and perhaps the biggest is the hiring of Mike McDaniel as offensive coordinator.

Herbert finally has a coordinator who will get the best out of him and put him in positions to succeed.

For CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles, he loves the creative flow of L.A.'s offseason plan.

“The Chargers' offense was completely broken because the offensive line was completely broken,” Pereles wrote. “Justin Herbert faced a quick pressure (within 2.5 seconds) on 177 dropbacks. So in comes offensive whizkid Mike McDaniel, whose creativity, coupled with the healthy returns of Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt, should open up a world of possibilities.

"There will be more motion, more varied (and simply better) run and pass schemes and, ideally, a much better environment for Herbert, Omarion Hampton and Ladd McConkey.”

Chargers finally set to realize potential?

After back-to-back 11-win seasons with a poor offense, now the Chargers have McDaniel calling the plays, plus a healthy Slater and Alt, there's every reason to think Herbert's potential will finally be realized.

Of course, Herbert's regular-season form and playoff form are polar opposites, as he is 0-3 in the postseason. So, while he could have a good regular season, many will be eagerly awaiting to see what he does in the postseason.

But first, L.A. has to get there.

And with McDaniel seen as the saving grace for one of the NFL's most promising quarterbacks, all eyes are on him to see if he can finally unlock Herbert's potential.
