Chargers, Cardinals floated as trade destinations for 448-yard running back

The Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals are two teams that could stand to upgrade at running back.

Both teams looked to be in decent shape at the position heading into the season, but injuries have ravaged both squads. The Chargers lost offseason addition Najee Harris for the year in Week 3, and standout rookie Omarion Hampton is on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Without Hampton and Harris, the Chargers are relying on Kimani Vidal and Jaret Patterson, as even backup Hassan Haskins is currently dealing with an injury.

In Arizona, the team lost veteran starter James Conner for the season in Week 3. Then, Conner's backup Trey Benson suffered a knee injury and was also added to injured reserve. The team is now counting on Bam Knight and Michael Carter to handle all of the carries.

Fortunately, there could be a big name at the running back position available for trade. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently identified realistic landing spots for the top trade candidates, and Knox thinks the Chargers and Cardinals are good fits for Breece Hall.

Hall is currently wasting away on the New York Jets- the only winless team in the league. As a result, it wouldn't be surprising to see the team trade away quality players like Hall to recoup draft capital.

Regarding a potential Hall deal, Knox offered the following:

It's not hard to see why teams would be calling about Breece Hall, who is likely the best running back who could realistically be available this season.

It's also not hard to envision why the Jets could be open to moving the 24-year-old for the right price. New York is sitting at 0-7, and he is an impending 2026 free agent.

While the running back has accounted for nearly a third (612) of New York's scrimmage yards this season, now is a reasonable time for a trade.

As Knox mentioned, Hall is on a bad team and is set to be a free agent after the season, so he's an obvious trade candidate. Knox mentioned a conditional third-round pick as reasonable compensation for the running back.

After Thursday Night Football in Week 8, it's possible the Chargers could be less willing to pay up for a running back like Hall. Vidal impressed against the Vikings, rushing for 117 yards and one score.

Vidal has now crossed the 100-yard mark twice in the last three games, so the Chargers may prefer to wait out Hampton's return.

The Cardinals, however, should be all over a Hall deal. The team is sitting at 2-5 and needs to make a move soon before the season slips away.

Taking out quarterback Kyler Murray, the Cardinals leading healthy rusher is Knight, who has just 102 yards on the season. Hall would immediately take over the majority of carries in Arizona and also help Kyler Murray as a pass-catching threat.
