CFP executive cracks Taylor Swift joke about National Championship tickets

The National Championship between No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers and No. 10 Miami Hurricanes is on pace to become one of the most expensive games in college football history, driven by a surging secondary ticket market since the matchup was finalized Friday.

As of Wednesday morning, two tickets together ranged from $3,670 to $941,896 for Row 1 at the 50-yard line on Stubhub. Nearly $2 million for a three-hour game is insane. Even seats in the 300 level at Hard Rock Stadium were listed around $3,700. That figure is nearly double from previous year. College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark leaned into the moment during a Tuesday media availability, cracking a joke that quickly made headlines.

“It’s more expensive than Taylor Swift? We have arrived,” Clark said via AP. “That’s awesome. I will just say that speaks to the excitement of the game.”

According to Vanity Fair, tickets for Swift’s sold-out Eras Tour made $2 billion in ticket sales over nearly two years.

Several factors are fueling the spike. Undefeated Indiana is playing for its first national title and the Hoosiers fans travel well. Miami has reached the championship game for the first time since 2001, effectively on its home turf. With most tickets allocated directly to the schools, secondary sellers control the remaining inventory. And with kickoff still days away, prices show little sign of dropping.

This could be a bidding war right before kickoff with many people holding thousands of dollars and still short by about that much watching on TV from neighboring bars in Miami.

Top-ranked Indiana will face Miami on Jan. 19 at Hard Rock Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN (Available on FuboTV).

In addition to game tickets, you can also find CFP National Championship parking passes on StubHub.
