The Boston Celtics are beginning to emerge as an intriguing offseason landing spot for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and it isn’t a ridiculous concept to grasp.
The championship-aspiring two-time MVP’s timeline matches up well with the Celtics’, and the fact that Boston competes in the Eastern Conference should give them a leg up on a good portion of the competition.
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons doesn’t agree, though, straightforwardly suggesting that he isn’t sold that the odds of the Celtics landing Antetokounmpo this summer are high.
“I keep saying it, I don’t think Boston is in on Giannis,” Simmons stated Sunday.
Simmons appears to be hinting that the Celtics may not feel comfortable moving on from Jaylen Brown and bringing in a new superstar to town. After all, Brown and Jayson Tatum have already proven they can produce a title alongside each other.
Although it’s clear the Celtics need to make roster adjustments this summer after an embarrassing first-round playoff exit, the idea of swapping Brown for Antetokounmpo could soon get dismissed.
The 2026 offseason has yet to begin, though, making it far too early to eliminate the Celtics from the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes. That said, it’s telling that Simmons isn’t prepared to claim that Boston will do whatever it takes to land the 10-time All-Star.
It’ll be interesting to see how it all shakes out in the offseason.
