Celtics and Pistons trade proposal would swap Jaylen Brown and Jalen Duren in blockbuster deal

The Boston Celtics and All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown could be headed towards a breakup this summer.

After the Celtics included Brown in trade talks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was traded to the Miami Heat from the Milwaukee Bucks, trade rumors involving Brown have begun to pick up steam.

ESPN's Shams Charania even reported that Boston is actively listening to offers for Brown and is active in trade talks.

"The Boston Celtics remain actively engaged in trade talks to move Jaylen Brown, with multiple teams interested in acquiring the All-Star forward, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania. Sources said the Celtics are listening to trade offers after Boston tried to use Brown as the key player in their trade offer to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is instead set to join the Miami Heat for multiple players and draft picks."

With Brown's future in Boston looking more uncertain than ever, an NBA insider believes a deal between the Celtics and Detroit Pistons could happen, where Boston would land a young All-Star in exchange for the 2024 Finals MVP.

Brown for Jalen Duren swap can't be ruled out

According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, a sign-and-trade between the Celtics and Pistons involving Brown and center Jalen Duren can't be ruled out.

"One more fascinating scenario that we've been advised not to rule out completely: A possible sign-and-trade run at Boston's perennial All-Star Brown. This would certainly require Detroit to be willing to part with restricted free agent big man Jalen Duren in a sign-and-trade exchange for Brown, which would obviously clash with the Pistons' longstanding view that Duren and Ausar Thompson are franchise pillars alongside Cunningham," Fischer wrote.

Duren is set to hit restricted free agency this offseason after a breakout 2025 campaign, but the 22-year-old is reportedly underwhelmed with Detroit's initial contract offers and is eyeing sign-and-trade opportunities when free agency officially opens on June 30.

"Sources: Jalen Duren was underwhelmed by Detroit’s initial offer in restricted free agency and is hoping to explore sign-and-trade options when June 30 arrives," The Athletic's Sam Amick reported.

Though the Pistons are committed to re-signing Duren for the long-term, it's still a bit concerning that the Memphis product is even thinking about a possible trade out of Detroit.

If the Pistons and Duren can't come to terms on a deal, a trade could follow, and the Celtics could be interested.

With Nikola Vučević entering free agency, Boston could have a dire need for a center. Duren would fit well into Joe Mazzulla's lineup as an elite rim protector who can also contribute nearly 20 points a night on the offensive end.

As for Detroit, acquiring Brown in this hypothetical deal would add the second star they need to pair with Cade Cunningham. However, cutting ties with Duren would leave the Pistons' frontcourt in disarray, as Paul Reed and Tobias Harris would be the lone rotational players remaining, with Isaiah Stewart also getting traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Overall, this trade would be a win-win for both sides, as the Celtics would acquire an ascending center to pair with Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, while the Pistons would pair Cunningham with Brown to form a lethal All-NBA duo capable of competing for a title in the East.
