Cavaliers hoping to trade ex-Warriors, Lakers starting point guard, per report

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals was commendable, but the New York Knicks made quick work of them en route to an appearance in the final round of the postseason.

It would be shocking for the 2016 NBA champions to return to the hardwood in 2026-27 with the same exact roster, as they clearly need to make some changes if they want to make a longer run.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, cutting ties with an ex-Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers point guard could be one of them.

"The most recent thing I've heard with the Cavs is they’re looking to shave off some salary,” Windhorst said Tuesday. “I think primarily they may be investigating if they could move Dennis Schroder.”

Schroder proved to be a valuable mid-season addition for the Cavaliers this season. Schroder, who began the year with the Sacramento Kings, was the stable and high-IQ backup point guard the Cavaliers needed to avoid an early playoff exit.

The 32-year-old veteran averaged 10.8 points and 4.9 assists per game in 30 contests with Cleveland, operating as the head of the snake for the Cavaliers in their second unit.

That said, trading Schroder, who just finished the first year of the three-year, $44 million contract he signed with the Kings last offseason, would undoubtedly be a sensible cost-cutting move for the Cavaliers this offseason.
