Shai Gilgeous-Alexander continues to be one of the most impressive players in the league. He is the reigning winner of the MVP and Finals MVP awards, so there was pressure for him to perform at the highest level for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
This season, he has been superb at leading the Thunder to the top seed in the Western Conference. With that, he has become the favorite to win the award again. This time, he has multiple rivals, which could be his downfall, but it seems Gilgeous-Alexander is still the favorite to win it.
Carmelo Anthony still picks SGA as the MVP over his rivals
Considering Gilgeous-Alexander is the leader of the NBA's best team, it is normal for him to be in the MVP discussion. He is also playing out of his mind this season with his consistency on both ends of the floor. SGA has continued to grow as a player because he is more decisive nowadays.
It is an impressive achievement because SGA was already playing high-level hoops last season. Now, he is leading the Thunder to all types of victories by being an elite scorer, playmaker, and solid defender. That has convinced a lot of people he deserves to be the MVP once again.

This season, SGA is going up against some fierce competitors. San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic, and SGA's familiar rival, Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, are his primary competitors.
Those are some fantastic players, but Hall of Famer Carmelo Anthony believes SGA edges them all out.
"I love Wemby. I love what he's doing... He is having a better MVP season this year than he did last year, leads the league in clutch scoring, carrying the defending champs, maybe again, to the best record in the NBA. If that's not the MVP, I really don't know what is," Anthony said on the NBA on NBC broadcast.
Anthony acknowledges that Wembanyama will most likely dominate this award in the near future. However, at the moment, SGA has the award "on lock" for him. It is a massive achievement to get two MVPs in a row, and it seems Gilgeous-Alexander is on his way to doing so.
