Cardinals get promising JJ Wetherholt injury news before Giants series

The St. Louis Cardinals could have their star second baseman back in the lineup soon. 

National League Rookie of the Year candidate JJ Wetherholt has been out since August 30 with right wrist tendinitis. 

According to John Denton of Roundtable Sports, the 24-year-old is hoping to return before the Cardinals' final homestand of the season. 

"It’s really all up to how I feel and how [I go about] through things (during the rehab process),” Wetherholt said. “Obviously, you don’t want to not play, and you want to play (again in 2026)… But I’m trying to do everything I can to get back.”

Wetherholt hit off a pitching machine at Busch Stadium on Friday, per Denton. 

That's a solid baby step in the process of making his comeback. 

In 130 games, Wetherholt has 4.6 bWAR with a .242/.343/.370 slash line with 17 home runs and a .713 OPS.

He's added 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts. 

In addition to his strong offensive season, Wetherholt is a clear candidate for a Gold Glove Award at second base.

He has +13 defensive runs saved and 22 outs above average, showcasing his outstanding defensive capabilities.
