The St. Louis Cardinals missed the postseason in 2024. They could be headed for a rebuild which means they could trade some of their star players for young talent.
FanSided's Curt Bishop proposed this blockbuster trade that sends Ryan Helsley to the Boston Red Sox:
- Cardinals receive: right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts, infielder Chase Meidroth and shortstop Nazzan Zanatello
- Red Sox receive: right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley
"The Cardinals do have some pitchers that are almost Major League ready, but they could stand to add at least one more," wrote Bishop. "Fitts was Boston's No. 13 ranked prospect in 2024. He made his debut late in the season and posted a 1.74 ERA in his four starts."
Fitts would be the headline player coming to the Cardinals. However, Meidroth and Zanatello would also be key players for the Cardinals' future. While Zanatello is not expected to reach the big leagues until 2027, Meidroth could reach the big leagues next year.
Spotrac projects Helsely to sign a six-year, $81 million deal when he hits free agency after next season. He led Major League Baseball in saves in 2024 and could command a haul in a trade.
In this trade package, the Cardinals would be getting the Red Sox No. 11, No. 13 and No.. 18 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Losing Helsley would be a big blow to the Cardinals for 2025, but it could set them up great for the future.
