MILAN — This was an Olympic battle for the ages, and the likely titan prevailed.
Canada emerged from an all-time quarterfinal clash against Czechia with a 4-3 overtime win after Mitch Marner scored the winner Wednesday night at Santagiulia Arena. The victory sends the Canadians to the semifinals, where their opponent is to be determined after the conclusion of the remaining games.
Whether or not their captain will join them is uncertain.
Canada celebrates tying goal in Olympics on Feb. 18, 2026. REUTERSSidney Crosby headed to the locker room in the second period, after the 38-year-old absorbed a series of hits from a few fellow NHLers.
Taking a hard hit from Radko Gudas, who then teamed up with Martin Necas to sandwich him into the boards shortly after, Crosby was a bit shaken up. The Nova Scotia native appeared to be in pain on the bench, and it ended his night.
The Czechs pushed the Canadians more than any other team has so far in the tournament.
Ondrej Palat gave the Czechs a 3-2 lead with 7:42 left in regulation, but Nick Suzuki’s end-to-end play for Canada forced overtime.
