Can LSU stay on top in a crowded SEC race?

1 hour ago 3

Heading into the 2025 season, Texas was projected by many to win the SEC in its first full year in the conference. Georgia, with its championship pedigree, remained a close second in both media polls and betting odds. But through the first four weeks of the season, another team has emerged as a legitimate threat to shake up the SEC hierarchy.

Despite being projected to finish third in the conference by ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) and preseason media polls, LSU is proving it has the pieces to contend. The Tigers opened the season with a massive 17-10 road win over then-No. 9 Clemson. It was a statement game that showed this team isn’t here to play catch-up. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has stepped confidently into the spotlight, throwing for 890 yards and three touchdowns through Week 4, leading one of the most efficient offenses in the SEC.

The Tigers also brought in a top-tier transfer class, with key additions on both sides of the ball, many of whom have previous SEC experience. Add to that the continuity of coordinators Joe Sloan and Blake Baker, and LSU looks like one of the most complete teams in the conference.

LSU’s upcoming SEC schedule won’t be easy with matchups against Florida, Ole Miss, and Alabama. But if they keep playing at this level, the Tigers may control their own destiny heading into November.

Georgia: A Favorite with Flaws

As of Week 4, Georgia remains a strong contender for the SEC title, holding strong odds to win the conference. Analysts like ESPN’s Pete Thamel have predicted the Bulldogs would represent the East in Atlanta, likely facing Texas or LSU.

But their performances have been inconsistent. Georgia narrowly escaped Tennessee in a 44-41 overtime thriller last week and has managed to stay perfect. The offense has struggled to finish drives, and the defense while still loaded with talent hasn't looked as dominant as in years past.

Georgia’s championship DNA keeps them in the conversation, but with quarterback play still unsettled and close calls piling up, their margin for error is thinner than usual.

Texas: Hype Slipping After Early Stumbles

Texas opened the season as the media’s preseason pick to win the SEC, but by Week 4, that hype has cooled. The Longhorns dropped a crucial non-conference game to Ohio State in the opening week and issues on offense have raised concerns.

Arch Manning's quarterback play has been underwhelming, with Texas ranking just 9th in the SEC in QBR. The team has also struggled with penalties and third-down efficiency. While the defense remains a strength led by stars Colin Simmons and Anthony Hill Jr. the offense hasn’t lived up to its billing. As a result, Texas' championship odds have dropped, while teams like LSU have surged upward.

The Verdict: LSU’s Path Is Real

With Texas showing cracks and Georgia not quite as dominant as expected, LSU is in position to rise. The Tigers have the quarterback, the playmakers, the coaching stability, and the momentum. If they continue their upward trajectory and navigate a tough SEC schedule, LSU might not just be a dark horse and could be the team holding the trophy in Atlanta this December.
