John McEnroe stirred controversy once again during the 2025 French Open semifinal between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. His commentary didn’t sit well with fans, who accused him of “spreading misinformation” about the Italian.

Sinner and Djokovic have both looked sharp at Roland Garros this year, and now they faced off for the ninth time in their careers. Sinner won the match with a score of 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) and will take on defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

McEnroe, who retired from professional tennis years ago, has stayed closely connected to the sport through various roles, including his regular work as a commentator. This year, he's part of the TNT Sports team covering the French Open, and during the broadcast, he said on air about Sinner:

“He's known for offense, not so much for defense.”

Tennis fans were quick to react to the American’s comments, believing he was making false claims. They took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize him, with one writing:

“CAN JOHN MCENROE SHUT HIS UNINFORMED A** UP ALREADY?” “Commentators are just spreading misinformation at this point this year,” another wrote.

One account posted:

“Why is he even commentating? Agassi /Courier should call every big match period.” “If anyone needs to retire it’s John McEnroe,” one user commented. “Lol, to think he’s a legend of the sport who’s supposed to know so much about the game,” another added.

One account tweeted:

“Absurd comment.”

Before the second men's semifinal at the 2025 French Open between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic began, John McEnroe didn’t hold back on his prediction. He made a bold call, saying that if the match went to five sets, he believed Djokovic would come out on top, even though there’s a big age difference between him and his opponent.

McEnroe said (via TNT Sports):

"Believe it or not, I think that if it went to a five setter, I would favour Novak [Djokovicl, even though he's older, because [Jannik] Sinner hasn't played that much for a while." "I think there's a little bit of a question mark of how he would hold up physically and mentally, having not played a lot of matches, which is pretty amazing to say that if you think about it, when one guy's 38 and the other guy's 23."

Sinner will now face Carlos Alcaraz in the Roland Garros final this year on Sunday, June 8. Alcaraz secured his spot in the summit clash by defeating Lorenzo Musetti in four sets.
