The San Francisco 49ers have a decision to make regarding Colton McKivitz’s contract. The 28-year-old tackle is in the last year of his contract, set to become a restricted free agent in 2026.
McKivitz started all 17 games for the 49ers in both 2023 and 2024 at right tackle, and projects to do the same again in 2025. Despite some streaky play, McKivitz ended 2024 with a 72.2 PFF grade for overall blocking, good for 37th in the league.
One week into training camp, McKivitz is trying to prove that he deserves a long-term contract. Utilizing his 6-foot-6, 301-pound frame, the tackle has been battling competitively with former defensive player of the year Nick Bosa.
Intense 1-on-1 battle between Nick Bosa and Colton McKivitz.
Bosa spin move put McKivitz on his back. McKivitz responded with a win the very next rep. Bosa asked for one more and took the tiebreaker via a bull rush.
During an interview with NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco, McKivitz made it clear what his expectations are for himself in 2025.
“I'm going to be a Pro Bowler this year,” he said. “I’ve told countless people. I’m just putting it out there just because that's going to hold me accountable and get me to where I want to go.
“If you don’t fight for it, you won’t get it.”
The offensive line outside of Trent Williams has been one of San Francisco’s weakest spots on the roster in recent memory, and with the three-time first-team All-Pro heading into his 15th season at 37 years old, players like McKivitz will be expected to take a step up.
No matter what anyone thinks about the caliber of player McKivitz has been, the current contract he’s playing under is a steal for a starting tackle. 2025 will be the second year of a two-year $4,610,000 contract for the former fifth-round pick.
If McKivitz is able to take another step, and potentially become a Pro Bowler this year, he will be sure to earn himself a big payday.
Finding quality tackles in the NFL has never been an easy task, and the 49ers will be paying close attention to McKivitz’s production over the course of training camp and the rest of the season to eventually make a decision on the future.
