Can Blue Jays play White Sox today? How air quality, AQI, wildfire smoke impact potential postponement in Toronto

1 hour ago 3

The Toronto Blue Jays are scheduled to return from the MLB All-Star Break on Friday night at home against the Chicago White Sox.

It hasn't been an ideal week in the skies in Toronto, though, with bad air quality (AQI) caused by wildfire smoke making it unhealthy to be outside recently.

The Blue Jays have a retractable roof, which gives them a better chance of playing ball than if they were outside.

The forecast also appears to be in Toronto's favor, although it'll have to be monitored throughout Friday to know for sure whether everything is on as scheduled Friday night for the 7:15 p.m. ET first pitch.

Can Blue Jays play White Sox tonight with air quality?

The forecast is in favor of the Blue Jays and White Sox being good to go.

Yes, the roof might make things easier, but it'd be more ideal if conditions outside, and of any air coming into the building, were better anyway -- and it's moving that way.

By the U.S. AQI system, Toronto is at 203 ("very unhealthy) at 7 a.m. ET.

That number is supposed to drop below 100 by 4 p.m. ET, and by first pitch be in the 70s, which isn't perfect but is considered safe to exist in.

Changes in wind or weather patterns can impact these numbers significantly as far as where the smoke is or isn't, so the actual AQI numbers throughout the day will need to be monitored to be sure.

But if the forecast proves correct, the Blue Jays should be good to go on Friday night.
