“Cam Newton throwing & stomping his hat”: NFL fans react as Chiefs sign Shane Buechele amid Patrick Mahomes & Gardner Minshew's season-ending injury

The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback room found itself in deeper problems on Sunday when Gardner Minshew left the game against the Tennessee Titans injured. It was the quarterback's first start after Patrick Mahomes’ season ended with a torn ACL just the game before.

Earlier reports suggest Minshew might have torn his ACL just like Mahomes, but further tests on the knee confirmed that avoided that. Nonetheless, he is set to miss the rest of the season with the injury, and he was immediately placed on injured reserve by the Chiefs on Monday.

Shaking things up in the quarterback room, Kansas City signed Shane Buechele on Monday to make up for the loss of Gardner Minshew. The quarterback was signed off the Bills’ practice squad, marking a return to the team where he spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Buechele is expected to become the immediate backup option to Chris Oladokun, who came in for Minshew against the Titans. Noah Gray, who was the emergency third quarterback for the Week 16 game, will remain in that position on the depth chart after the shake-up.

Chris Oladokun reacts to his Week 16 appearance for the Chiefs

Chris Oladokun addressed reporters in his postgame press conference on Sunday, opening up about his surprise Week 16 appearance and how he performed against the Tennessee Titans. The quarterback was only promoted to the active roster a day before the game.

"Our QB room is so close, and so, when you see good friends go down like that, it's really tough," Oladokun said. "Being here for four years, you always walk through when your first moment's going to be, and when you're going to sort of get an opportunity. “I've really just attacked these last four years like 'you never know.' And today just happened to be an opportunity for me, and I wanted to take full advantage of it."

Oladokun is set to make his first start for the Chiefs when they welcome the Denver Broncos to Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night. It's a rare opportunity for him to make an impression and get the chance to continue with the team in the upcoming season.
