California couple flee monster wildfire in France — a year after home was destroyed by Eaton Fire

A California couple who relocated to Bordeaux, France, after losing their home in the devastating Eaton Fire is being forced to uproot once again as a rapidly expanding blaze there looms near their door.

Cynthia Perello and her husband told ABC they moved to Europe because the cost of living was cheaper after suffering the loss of their home in Altadena.

Fast-forward to last Saturday, she and her husband fled to Paris to leave the area where France is experiencing the worst fire it’s seen in decades, according to officials.

French officials say the flames have already burned land four times the size of Paris. France has already surpassed their average acreage burned by wildfires. The country hit a new record, with more than 242,000 acres burned.

Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, said it was the country’s worst fire crisis since World War II. Perello told ABC7, the evacuation they’ve had to make “feels like deja vu.”

“It’s something that I never thought I’d have to revisit again, and now I do,” Perello said. The disastrous fire is now nine miles away from their French home.

The couple told the station that their life was going well in Bordeaux. They were saving money and seeing how they could begin to rebuild their home in Altadena that burned down.

But as they encounter another wildfire, the couple has brought back familiar worries.

“We’re not under evacuation notice, but neither were we in Altadena, California,” Perello told the station. “I do fear the worst, because I don’t know what to expect. I mean, this is uncharted territory. I believe this is even worse than, I hate to say it, but Altadena.

Despite the lack of evacuation orders, the couple decided to leave after seeing burning homes in the coastal city of Cap Ferret

“It’s very difficult to sleep because I don’t know what to expect. I don’t know if it’s PTSD, but I definitely know it’s a huge amount of anxiety,” Perello told ABC7.
