What a difference a year makes. Actually, what a massive difference two years makes. Just think about Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams' first season with the Chicago Bears and how the team didn't even make it to the postseason. Then, in one season with Ben Johnson, just a year later, the team snagged the top spot in the NFC North. That's such a turnaround.
So, Johnson is in the midst of a real Bears turnaround, and this team is going into the fresh season with wind on their backs. Expectations are fairly high, not just for Johnson but for Williams. Now, Williams is doing something different this season, in a good way.
Williams is showing a new level of anticipation
As Johnson explained on Thursday amid the team's joint practice, Williams is showing the Bears a level of anticipation and understanding that wasn't there before.
Johnson said Williams is now showing better timing, a stronger understanding of where to put the football and a willingness to fit throws into tight windows. He also trusts his pass catchers more, and after getting a full season of experience and lots of repeated reps, Johnson said.
"I think that's been probably the best thing so far this camp, just the anticipation, the timing, the understanding of where we want to put the football," Johnson said. "He is not afraid to fit it into tight windows. He trusts his pass catchers. A year ago, a lot of the things were foreign to him, and now you can tell he has some banked reps and he's able to anticipate where he wants to go with the football."
So, Williams is able to anticipate where he wants to go with the football, something that was still foreign to him a year ago. That's a more than useful skill as a quarterback.
