There was not a clear winner until the very last minute during the Duke Blue Devils' March Madness Sweet 16 date with the St. John's Red Storm. Coach Rick Pitino and Coach Jon Scheyer were playing chess with their schematics which kept the game close. When it all ended, Duke relied on a veteran to help them pull off the win and advance to the Elite Eight — Caleb Foster blazed up in the clutch.
Foster becomes Duke's veteran necessity in March Madness
After the half, Duke was only just a single point ahead of St. John's. Coach Scheyer was throwing the kitchen sink and then some in order to get his team to March Madness' Elite Eight. The Boozer twins along with Isaiah Evans do not seem enough to push them over the Coach Pitino-led squad,
Then, the Duke basketball mastermind put Foster on the court for a majority of the second half. A lot of Blue Devils fans raised eyebrows because he had just come off surgery from a right foot injury. Foster immediately erased all of those worries as he delivered 11 points in 19 minutes through knocking down five out of his eight field goal attempts.
The Duke junior veteran got real on what inspired him to go out in this crucial March Madness bout despite not having more than a month off to recover from injury, via CBS Sports.
"I just pulled everything to my teammates, you know. I watch them battle. I try to do everything to help them win. It's a tough game so credit to St. John's who were a really tough opponent. It comes down to preparation. The stuff that we did all the way back in the summer. The guys love to play with each other. Great teams find a way to win," Foster declared.
It was not just him who balled out for the Blue Devils. Evans led the scoring barrage while also grabbing four rebounds. Cam Boozer also had another all-around performance with 22 points, 10 rebounds. three assists, and a block.
Duke now awaits the winner of the clash between Dan Hurley's UConn Huskies and Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans as they inch closer to winning March Madness for the first time since 2015.
