AJ Dybantsa continues to etch his name into the NCAA record book.

With a 35-point performance Wednesday night at No. 4 Arizona, Dybantsa tied Michael Beasley and Trae Young for the most 35-point games by a freshman in Division I history with five. The BYU forward has six regular-season games remaining and a strong chance to claim the record outright.

Dybantsa finished with 35 points on 13-of-28 shooting in the Cougars’ 75-68 loss at the McKale Center in Tucson. The 6-foot-9 forward from Brockton, Massachusetts, topped 30 points for the sixth time this season and continued a historic debut campaign.

BYU (19-7, 7-6 Big 12) was playing its first game without starting guard Richie Saunders, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in a 90-86 overtime win against Colorado on Saturday. Despite the absence, Dybantsa carried the offensive load, showcasing his versatility with drives, midrange touch and perimeter scoring.

Earlier in the game, Dybantsa also surpassed Danny Ainge for BYU’s single-season freshman scoring record. Ainge set the mark in 1978 with 632 points. Dybantsa eclipsed it on a euro-step finish in the first half, pushing his season total past the milestone.

He ended the night with 644 points, already the 14th-highest single-season total in program history regardless of class.

For Dybantsa, the milestones are piling up. With several games still ahead, the freshman phenom has positioned himself to make even more history before the regular season concludes.
