Bulls land defensive anchor Nic Claxton in blockbuster three-team trade

The Chicago Bulls made one of the biggest moves of the NBA offseason Monday night, landing center Nic Claxton in a three-team deal that could significantly reshape their frontcourt. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the trade sends Julius Randle and the No. 28 overall pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Brooklyn Nets. In return, the Bulls acquire Claxton, while Minnesota receives Brooklyn's No. 33 pick.

While much of the initial attention centered on Randle's surprising departure from a Timberwolves team that reached the Western Conference Finals, Chicago may have quietly emerged as one of the biggest winners of the deal.

Bulls finally find their answer in the middle

For years, the Bulls have searched for consistency at the center position. Claxton immediately provides exactly that.

The 6-foot-11 former Brooklyn Nets standout has developed into one of the league's premier defensive big men since being selected in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft. During his seven seasons with Brooklyn, Claxton established himself as an elite rim protector and versatile defender capable of switching onto smaller players.

Even in what many considered a down year statistically, Claxton averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 blocks across 69 games during the 2025-26 season.

Those numbers only tell part of the story. At his peak, Claxton finished second in the NBA in blocks per game and led the league in field-goal percentage while emerging as a legitimate Defensive Player of the Year candidate. His ability to defend multiple positions has made him one of the NBA's most valuable defensive centers.

A major shift for Brooklyn

The Nets' decision to move Claxton signals another significant step in the franchise's rebuild. Claxton had spent his entire NBA career in Brooklyn after being selected with the No. 31 overall pick in 2019. Over time, he evolved from a developmental project into one of the organization's foundational pieces.

Now, Brooklyn adds a proven veteran in Julius Randle, a three-time NBA All-Star and former NBA Most Improved Player. Randle averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.0 assists last season and gives the Nets a recognizable star as they continue reshaping their roster. The inclusion of the No. 28 draft pick also provides Brooklyn with another asset heading into Wednesday night's NBA Draft.

Chicago betting on defense

The Bulls' motivation appears clear. Chicago has lacked an elite defensive presence in the paint for several seasons. Claxton immediately changes that equation.

At just 27 years old, he still fits the timeline of a franchise attempting to build a sustainable contender while remaining competitive in the Eastern Conference. His athleticism, shot-blocking ability and experience as a full-time starter should make him an instant impact player in Chicago.

The Bulls didn't just acquire a center Monday night. They acquired one of the NBA's best defensive big men and a player who could become a cornerstone of their next era.
