The Buffalo Bills weren't afraid to spent money this offseason, locking down several home-grown stars on long-term extensions. Khalil Shakir, Greg Rousseau, Christian Benford, Terrel Bernard, and Josh Allen were all given extensions. The former four all got new four-year deals, while Allen was given a six-year extension with the most guaranteed money in NFL history.
And while the Bills didn't get a deal done with James Cook, Matt Verderame of Sports Illustrated labeled the Bills' spending spree as one of the best moves of the NFL offseason by any team.
"Good on the Buffalo Bills," Verderame writes. "So often, teams that get close to a ring but fail for a few years decide to make drastic changes to both the coaching staff and the roster. In Buffalo’s case, the Bills decided to double down on the current group. This offseason, general manager Brandon Beane extended a slew of his younger, homegrown players, including corner Christian Benford, receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrel Bernard and edge rusher Gregory Rousseau. There’s not a single Pro Bowl or All-Pro nod between the quartet, but each is a rising star at his position and Beane got them all on good deals."
The Bills keeping their core in tact highlights their belief in the group as a whole. They've reached two AFC Championship Games in the last five seasons, and it would be foolish to completely blow everything up.
