River Plate and Monterrey will close out Day 8 of the FIFA Club World Cup tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
River Plate is coming in with momentum after a 3-1 win against Urawa Red Diamonds in their tournament opener on Tuesday. While the Argentinian powerhouse hasn’t won the Copa Libertadores in recent years, their consistent performance across South America earned them a spot in the 32-team tournament via CONMEBOL’s ranking-based qualifications.
Monterrey will be looking to secure their first win of the Club World Cup after a hard-fought 1-1 draw in their Tuesday opening game against UEFA Champions League finalist Inter Milan. Sergio Ramos, the Mexican team’s 39-year-old defender, scored an impressive header in the 25th minute, but the Italians equalized the game the minutes before halftime. Monterrey qualified for the tournament as the winners of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League.
Now, they return back to the Rose Bowl Stadium just a few days later to take on River Plate.
