Bucs' Shilo Sanders gets real on Deion Sanders' shadow

The most prevalent media story in training camp has been around Shedeur Sanders fighting for a spot on the Cleveland Browns. It seems like every day there's a new wrinkle to the Shedeur saga, making national headlines and only propelling his star power.

But his brother, Shilo, is facing even more adversity in Tampa Bay as an undrafted rookie free agent, battling just to make the practice squad, let alone carve out a role on the 53-man roster.

Even with six years of collegiate experience, Shilo struggled to find personal success, with his only honor being a second-team All-SWAC nod in 2021.

The expectations of being the son of Deion Sanders could add further pressure to development as a pro, but in a recent interview with Mike Jones of The Athletic, Shilo acknowledged that he has to blaze his own trail.

"I can't be my dad," Shilo said. "Everyone's different. Everything is different. It's not 1995 anymore. It's 2025. So even if I did every little thing like my dad, I still wouldn't be him."

The lack of self-awareness has plagued Shedeur's career, but Shilo illustrates in that quote that he's doing just fine in that category.

If Shilo wants to stick around with the Buccaneers, he has to improve his one-on-one tackling and be more nimble in pass protection. His best-case scenario is likely to be a depth box-to-box strong safety who can excel against the run and be a factor on special teams.

His mindset is encouraging; now he just has to perform on the field.
