49ers sign former QB after placing All-Pro's brother on IR

The San Francisco 49ers got some rough injury news on Friday.

One of their new wide receivers, Equanimeous St. Brown, has been placed on injured reserve. He's the brother of Lions superstar Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Equanimeous was signed as San Francisco dealt with a host of other wide receiver injuries this summer. But now he's the one injured, a reported foot injury.

To fill that roster spot, the 49ers signed quarterback Tanner Mordecai.

The 'Niners had just waived Mordecai four days ago.

Mordecai spent his college career at three schools: Oklahoma, SMU and Wisconsin.

He originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2024. He was cut in the preseason, then spent the season on the practice squad.

Mordecai might be looking at a similar situation this time around.

He's more important with seventh-round pick Kurtis Rourke out injured.

The 49ers clearly only want to see their first-string QB playing, of course. Brock Purdy just signed a $250 million contract this offseason.

It's a great opportunity for Mordecai if he can manage to stick around. Purdy is a great inspiration to learn from, and Kyle Shanahan is a strong offensive mind.

St. Brown had just been released and then signed again, too. San Francisco is certainly doing plenty of roster movement so far this summer.
