Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield makes joke over Emeka Egbuka's one-handed catch vs. Jets

1 hour ago 3

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to get past the New York Jets 29-27 at Raymond James Stadium, and it was rookie Emeka Egbuka who stole the show for the home side.

With the rookie making several crucial plays, a one-handed catch over Sauce Gardner and the 28-yard reception on the game-winning drive, Emeka would finish his day with 85 yards from his six receptions.

But when it came to deciding which was better, his one-handed catch or his crucial reception late in the fourth quarter, for Baker Mayfield, it was an easy decision.

"One hand catch," Mayfield said with a smile. "He's disrespecting my passes downfield with one hand. Rookies."

Egbuka now more valuable in light of Mike Evans injury

While the win was good for the Buccaneers, what wasn't was veteran Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans leaving the game with an apparent hamstring injury, and No. 13 looked to be visibly annoyed on the sidelines, which could suggest that he knows he's done something substantial.

Last season, Evans missed a month with a hamstring before coming back in the second half of the season to help the Buccaneers secure the division title and playoff football. But what his injury now does is put a lot of pressure on Egbuka to continue his fine form.

We don't know when Chris Godwin will return, and we don't have all the information on Evans' injury, so the passing offense for Josh Grizzard might have to go through Egbuka, which is exactly why the Buccaneers drafted him.

The one-handed catch over Gardner was something to behold, and it seems like every time he steps onto the field, good things happen for Tampa Bay. But now, potentially without Evans, those good things must continue to happen.
