The Browns’ prospects just got bleaker for the 2025 season.

Cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. suffered a torn Achilles Tuesday during training camp, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday morning.

Emerson Jr. had a standout 2023 campaign where he intercepted four passes, but did not intercept a ball in 17 games and only defended five passes last season.

Reporters who were on site for the non-contact injury recounted what sounded like a horrific scene in Berea, Ohio, with the youngster having to be carted off the field.

“To stand there and watch him writhing in pain, screaming out in agony and right in front of us there on the field … And to watch him have to get loaded onto the cart and watch all of his teammates praying for him and consoling him and Kevin Stefanski hugging him and talking to him, it was really tough to watch,” Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot wrote.

Emerson Jr. was among the premier young cornerbacks in the NFL after the 2023 season and looked to re-establish himself as such this year.

He now faces a long road to recovery and is a player the Browns will sorely miss this year.

The Browns will look to Tony Brown II and Chigozie Anusiem, among others, to fill the void.

Cleveland also is without quarterback Kenny Pickett due to a grade two hamstring injury, which changes the dynamic of the team’s quarterback situation.

Pickett is part of a highly contested competition alongside veteran Joe Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

The Browns are coming off a 3-14 season and are expected to be among the worst teams in football.
