Browns QB battle should be over after Deshaun Watson's 9th INT in 12 practices

The Cleveland Browns are one of many teams holding a quarterback competition this summer during training camp, but they might end up being one of the last to name a starter.

Todd Monken has made it known he wants to drag this out to see both QBs get first-team reps in a preseason game. But the Browns should really put an end to this competition sooner rather than later to give whoever the starter is more work with the 1s.

But who should start? Well, after Mary Kat Cabot of Cleveland.com shared that Deshaun Watson threw his ninth interception in 12 practices, it seems clear that Shedeur Sanders should be QB1 in Cleveland this upcoming season.

Watson missed the mark in double-coverage, throwing another interception that should signal the end of his bid to be the Browns starter this season.

It's practice, and yet, Watson has thrown nine interceptions. If a QB threw nine interceptions in 12 games, it would not be good.

Watson has done that in 12 practices, which feature significantly fewer passes than a typical game. Plus, some of these interceptions have come against the second-team defense.

Compared to Sanders, Watson has been worse all training camp. This interception statistic is just one reason why the Browns should not stick with the veteran Watson as their starter.

Beyond his struggles during practice, with an alarming nine interceptions in 12 practices, Watson's ceiling is far lower than what Sanders' is.

At least the second-year QB is young, under contract for the next three seasons, and has some untapped potential.

This one interception isn't the sole reason why Watson shouldn't earn the QB1 job, but it's just another mistake that should give the edge to Sanders in this QB competition.

The Browns QB battle should be over, as Watson's 9th INT in 12 practices is more than enough poor production to give Monken justification to name Sanders the starter for the 2026 season.
